The Queen of Hearts, Gran Maitresse Erzulie, is the personification of love, beauty, and femininity. Gran Erzulie Kevin Wikse

Gran Maitresse Erzulie is the personification of love, beauty, and femininity. Gran Maitresse Erzulie is a highly elevated Loa who rarely touches down for more than a few minutes. If she does, consider yourself and the temple very blessed. Her husband, Ogun Balendjo, is always close behind. If Gran Maitresse Erzulie takes possession, you can almost guarantee Ogun Balendjo will. Gran Maitresse Erzulie is the Matron of the Erzulie line, which includes both Erzulie Freda and Erzulie Danthor.

Even though she is ephemeral, Gran Maitresse Erzulie’s intervention is far-reaching. She is sweet, loving, and compassionate, but do not mistake her kindness for weakness. Gran Maitresse Erzulie protects women and children. She cries for the sufferings of all people and wants to heal humanity. She seeks revenge for the rape and domestic abuse and gladly avenges violence towards women and children.

Gran Maitresse Erzulie enjoys cleanliness and luxury. Perfume and powders are dispensed to salute her. Pink and white fabrics are placed on the ground for her to walk on. Gran Maitresse Erzulie comes early in a ceremony to avoid cigar smoke. She will not tolerate foul language. Pink champagne is poured for her, and sweet finger cakes are offered for her to eat.

Gran Maitresses Erulie walks with Our Lady of Sorrows. She cries for all of humanity and wants only the best for everyone. She carries a perpetually breaking heart which is paradoxically always on the mend.

Gran Maitresse Erzulie is consulted on all matters, particularly for love, romance, marriage, family, financial issues, and healing and protecting loved ones.

Prayer for Our Lady of Sorrows

Oh most holy and afflicted Virgin! Queen of Martyrs! thou who didst stand motionless beneath the Cross, witnessing the agony of thy expiring Son–through the unceasing sufferings of thy life of sorrow, and the bliss which now more than amply repays thee for thy past trials, look down with a mother’s tenderness and pity on me, who kneel before thee to venerate thy dolors, and place my requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of thy wounded heart; present them, I beseech thee, on my behalf, to Jesus Christ, through the merits of His own most sacred death and passion, together with thy sufferings at the foot of the cross, and through the united efficacy of both obtain the grant of my present petition.

To whom shall I resort in my wants and miseries if not to thee, Oh Mother of Mercy, who, having so deeply drunk of the chalice of thy Son, canst compassionate the woes of those who still sigh in the land of exile? Offer for me to my Savior one drop of the Blood which flowed from His sacred veins, one of the tears which trickled from His divine eyes, one of the sighs which rent His adorable Heart. O refuge of the universe and hope of the whole world, do not reject my humble prayer, but graciously obtain the grant of my petition.

Amen
